Windows and Tiles

St. Alban's Minton Memorial Tiles & McCausland Stained Glass Windows

WINDOWS & LOYALIST TILES OF ST. ALBAN'S

  • The Power and Son architectural firm from Kingston was commissioned in 1884 to design and oversee the construction of St. Alban’s Church.  Beginning in 1849 and until 1930, Power and Son built a number of important buildings in the Kingston area, which today are considered local architectural landmarks. Some of their notable projects were the reconstruction of Kingston's City Hall and its Dome, McIntosh Castle, the Hotel Belvedere, and an extension to St. George's Cathedral.

  • Built of limestone in the Gothic Revival style with a distinctive tower and Spire, the St. Alban’s interior displays a number of unique architectural features.  The vaulted wooden ceiling above the altar (the chancel) has the appearance of being crafted by carpenters with ship building experience using plank on plank construction.

  • The 64 Minton commemorative tiles encircle the interior of the church, giving it a history and a look unmatched. Of these,  33 tiles had been installed by the time of the first service in 1890.  The final tile was added by 1909.  These specially designed encaustic tiles, memorializing United Empire Loyalist individuals and other early settlers, were funded by their descendants as part of Reverend Forneri’s fundraising endeavours. The only similarly sourced tiles known in North America are in the Capitol building in Washington, DC and a building in New York City's Central Park.

  • Numerous stained glass windows also add to the beauty of St. Alban’s, while having contributed to its construction.  Reverend Forneri encouraged parishioners and benefactors to purchase stained glass windows to support the construction of the church.  Three stained glass windows were installed by 1890 with others being added over the next 100 years to replace the clear glass in the original windows.  Most of these stained glass windows were designed and created by artisans employed at the prominent stained glass studio of Robert McCausland in Toronto.  The luminous, contemporary Rose window installed in 2008 was the final window in St. Alban’s to be beautified with stained glass.

  • The carved pews and altar are original to St. Alban’s and were built to Reverend Forneri’s specifications.

WINDOWS & LOYALIST TILES OF ST. ALBAN'S

The Windows of St. Alban's - $30.00 plus shipping

Written by Jane Lovell & Diane Berlet            Photography by David Clendenning

St. Alban’s, an historic Gothic Revival limestone Church for 128 years, has 21 memorial stained glass windows. Built, starting in 1884 (and opened in 1890), to mark the centennial of the arrival of the United Empire Loyalists at Adolphustown, in what had become Ontario, the church was designed to be fitted with windows honouring the Loyalist pioneers. Five memorial windows were in place when the church opened, with the additional 16 added one at a time over the next 120 years.

Illustrated with over 90 brilliantly coloured photographs, this book examines the windows of St. Alban's from a number of perspectives, including the techniques and stained glass studios employed in their creation and the symbolism embodied in the images portrayed. The stories behind the people memorialized in the windows and those who commissioned the work serve to chronicle the lives of the Loyalist and other pioneer families who were instrumental in developing the region, many of whom still reside in the community.

The Loyalist Tiles of St. Alban’s - $40.00 plus shipping.

Written by Diane Berlet            Photography by Graem Coles

This is the story of the construction of St. Alban’s, a beautiful Gothic Revival stone Church, in Adolphustown, Ontario. The cornerstone for this Memorial Church was laid in 1884 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the landing of the United Empire Loyalists at Adolphustown.

To fund the building of St. Alban’s rare encaustic Minton memorial tiles were purchased by UEL descendants to honour their Loyalist ancestors. This book describes the ordering and making of these commemorative tiles in colourful detail.

Photographs and accompanying short biographies of each individual highlight common themes of refugees everywhere throughout time: dislocation, courage, resilience and endurance. The 64 tile frieze summarizes the lives of many of Upper Canada’s founders who established the values and traditions of their fledgling new country.
